Last weekend, 9th – 11th October, the British Kart Championships headed north to Fulbeck, Lincolnshire for the sixth round of the calendar.
The weekend marked the third and penultimate round for the Honda Classes, Junior TKM and TKM extreme class. It was also a double-header and championship title decider for the KZ2 class.
The action kick started on Friday with practice sessions and Saturday saw timed qualifying heats and first of the heats for the Honda and TKM classes and a final race for the KZ2 class.
Ewan Charman of the Honda Cadet class claimed pole position for the first heat of the day on Saturday but was beaten to the win by Connor Duncan. Charman was back on top form for the second heat Sunday and claimed the win, but a consistent performance from Zac Drummond during the heats meant that it was the young Scottish driver who was on pole for the pre-final.
Drummond defended his lead during the pre-final to earn himself pole position for the final, with Duncan joining him to make up the first row of the grid.
During the final, Charman was victorious once more as a calculated drive saw him climb four places to win the race and lift the first-place trophy. Duncan claimed second place and Charman’s Ambition Motorsport teammate, Blake Ticehurst, made up the final place on the podium.
Tim Wilson Motorsport driver Alastair Cresswell was ultimately victorious during the Junior TKM final. Joining him on the podium were privateers Jack Saunders and Alfie Gaford. Currently sitting second in the championship standings, Cresswell’s performance during the weekend saw him edge ever closer to the current leader Harvey Cole. Only two points separate Cole and Cresswell, and it will be all to play for during the final round of the TKM Championship at PFI later this month.
TKM extreme saw some fierce competition across the three days of racing as the class had five different winners across the heats, pre-final, and final. However, it was current O plate holder Adam Sparrow that lifted the coveted first-place trophy, extending his championship lead by 10 points. Matthew Taylor and Kye Springfield joined him on the podium.
The KZ2 class provided the first Championship decider of the 2020 BKC season. The action from the small but mighty grid was an electrifying encounter. An unsuccessful Saturday saw Championship leader Charlton qualify in last place for the first final of the weekend and finish a miserable 15th place. Dan Kelly took the win, with Tom Longfield and James Glenister making up the other two steps of the podium. A consistent drive from Ryan Cannon during saw him climb to the top of the standings, creating a threat for Charlton’s championship fight.
Only a point separated the top four drivers going into the championship title deciding final race on Sunday. Cannon lead the pack throughout the race to claim the win. Glenister and Kelly joined him on the podium.
Charlton needed fifth or better to secure the gearbox title, but for most of the race was lying in sixth. A last corner overtake elevated him into the top five – giving him the series spoils by a single point.
